One is not able to determine if a child has dyslexia just by looking at them. It is a “ hidden “ disability. There are lot of misconceptions about dyslexia. It can make it difficult to know what’s accurate and right and how to best support your child. Scientists today know more than ever about dyslexia. Yet many myths about dyslexia are widespread and have persisted over time. Here we have tried to bust some of the common myths.

MYTH
Dyslexia causes letters or words to appear backwards or out of order.
FACT
Many children write reverse letters or confuse word order while reading when they are in kindergarten. But this is not the only sign nor a definitive sign of having dyslexia. If this persists by the end of first grade, then it may signal for the parents and teachers to be alert.

Dyslexia is a result of bad parenting.
FACT
Dyslexia does not happen to a child because of bad parenting. It is also not because of eating the wrong things during pregnancy. Yes genes do play a big role in it but definitely not your actions.

Problems with vision causes dyslexia.
FACT
Researchers suggest that dyslexia stems from language difficulties rather than vision. Children with dyslexia are likely to have vision problems the same as children without it.

Dyslexia is caused by bad teaching.
FACT
Studies have shown that the causes of dyslexia are hereditary and neurological. It has nothing to do with the style of teaching.

FACT
A person with dyslexia can learn to read and spell. But their reading and writing may not reflect their ability.

FACT
Dyslexia is not a disease. It is a neurological disorder usually present at birth. Early intervention addresses the issue to a large extent.

Kids who don’t speak English can’t have dyslexia.
FACT
Dyslexia exists all over the world. It is often missed because it is assumed that they’re struggling with a new language. It is suggested by researchers that brain development and Weaknesses in people with dyslexia are similar irrespective of the language they speak.
