Speech Therapy is the Assessment and Treatment of Communication problems and Speech Disorders. It is performed by
Speech and Language Pathologists (SLP’s). We in India, are referred to as Audiologists and Speech and Language Pathologists (ASLP’s). We diagnose
Hearing impairments, various kinds of Hearing loss in infants to geriatric population. New born screening is very important and is done in hospitals or clinics as soon as (within 24hours) a child is born.
Speech Therapy techniques are used to improve
Communication skills and Speech impairments. These include Delay in Speech and Language acquisition, Articulation Therapy, Language intervention in Dyslexia, Fluency disorders like Stuttering and Cluttering, Voice Therapy, relearning speech and language skills in children and adults Post Stroke or Traumatic Brain injuries. We work with Autistic children, mentally challenged, hearing impaired, cochlear implanted children. An ASLP also dispenses Hearing Aids.
How Speech Therapy Works?
ASLP diagnoses the kind of problem the child has and based on it the treatment is planned out.
ASLP’s help with:
• Misarticulation: When the child is not speaking clearly, mispronouncing the words eg : replacing ‘k’ sound with ‘t’, cake becomes tate. Children who have cleft palate, have nasality and articulation errors.
• Fluency Disorders: Stuttering – Difficulty with the flow of Speech. Repetition of words, blocks etc. are seen and along with stuttering, emotional distress is also taken care of.
• Cluttering – Child talks too fast and thus clarity of speech is affected.
• Voice: Quality of voice as in Hoarseness of Voice, Puberphonia – pitch issue wherein at puberty the boys voice doesn’t change and remains high pitch.
• Dysphagia: Difficulty with eating, swallowing and drooling.
ASLP’s also help with:
• Receptive Language – where understanding and comprehension is affected.
• Expressive Language – where spoken speech is affected, they know what they wish to say but cannot express themselves. They have word finding difficulty. Also Apraxia, where co-ordination of Speech muscles is affected.
Benefits of Speech Therapy
• Speech Therapy helps children to speak clearly. It gives them confidence. Children with speech issues can benefit socially, emotionally and academically from Speech Therapy.
• For children with Reading issues such as Dyslexia, ASLP’s are critical in making differential diagnosis. They can evaluate all language domains as in listening, speaking, reading and writing. It is important to screen for vision problems, rule out ADHD and hearing loss before diagnosing Dyslexia.
• Speech Therapy helps them to differentiate and distinguish specific sounds in words. This in turn helps improve reading, comprehension skills and encourages children to read and write.
• Early intervention with Speech therapy is most beneficial.
